MISSION & VISION
CreateSpace Community is dedicated to creating a platform for marginalized communities (LGBTQIA+, people of color, neurodivergent people, and disabled people) by providing visual and performing arts events and activities to garner community and give opportunities for growth in multiple artistic areas.
What's in a name?
The name "CreateSpace" means, doubly, "a space to create things", but also "to create space for—." Sarena Vasquez came up with the idea of this community hub in August of 2024 during a bought uninspiring unemployment. She recognized creatives of all kinds were in the same boat as her; stuck in the terrible cycles of capitalism that affected her as a neurodivergent, queer, Filipino woman. With her interest in community and of the progression/improvement of the human condition away from western capitalistic standards, she created a community of her own. Americans and other societies are traumatized from the abuse of capitalism. Additionally, marginalized communities are often severely affected and traumatized from this system that was not built with them in mind. Our vision is that marginalized creatives in Los Angeles, CA have access to a supportive community that values authenticity and encourages creative exploration.
Research shows that the opposite of "trauma" is "play."
CreateSpace Community coordinates with volunteer artists and community members to provide programs to make creative experiences accessible for everyone.
CreateSpace Community programs help provide opportunities for connection by giving the artistic space needed for adult creatives to feel safe in their environment and connect with the people around them.
OUR VALUES
CreateSpace Community values COMMUNITY, serving as an ally and haven for marginalized groups, moving away from capitalism navigating as best as we can through its system. We value the role of CHANGE (equity) in providing accessible avenues, and are responsive to the diverse histories, strengths, challenges, and needs of our members and communities we serve. We value the role of CREATIVITY in everyone's ability to come as their authentic selves in order to change the world. We value COURAGE to practice "brave-space" to put yourself out there and try new things. Finally we value CARE which we define by our ability to operate and deliver programs that reflect our core values.
